Reading Blog #2

I really enjoyed reading this article and learning more about John Cage. Initially I thought that his 4:33 piece was kind of boring and annoying but after learning about the purpose of it, I really think that it is brilliant and thought provoking. I think it is brilliant as a piece of art and it breaks the boundaries of music even to this day. Like I said initially I was confused with it but I think that learning the history of the song makes it really interesting and fun to learn about. Learning about cage’s other work is interesting as well. His experimental attitude towards music and art in general is very inspiring for my own work. The way that he approaches the topic and the fact that he has found success doing what he does is very interesting about his work. When I learned that he was a Harvard professor I was surprised because of the nature of his work. It seems like Harvard wouldn’t like a John Cage as a professor because of his controversial nature but I think that he is definitely deserving because he is musically a genius. Also learning about his mycology experience was interesting because that practice is uncommon today let alone back then. His knowledge on this niche subject proves his intelligence is on a much higher level than previously thought. I really think because of this class and because of this article that I would like to learn more about John Cage and learn more about his work.
